Styrene monomer is a colorless liquid similar to aromatic substances. Its boiling point is 146 degrees Celsius and its specific weight is 0.9 grams per cubic centimeter.
It is mostly used in the processing of polystyrene plastics. The big method of processing styrene is through ethylbenzene. First, benzene is alkylated with ethylene. It is then dehydrogenated onto a catalyst of aluminum chloride, solid phosphoric acid, or silica – alumin to styrene.
